Just a couple of hours before the match against West Wickham Thirds, we received the frustrating news that they wouldn’t be attending. With so many people involved in our home matches—from bar and food staff to doormen, media, coaches, and of course the players—it’s more than just a pain to call off a game.
Determined to make the best of a bad situation, we once again turned to our second team… and what a start they had! They raced into the lead within seconds, catching the first team completely off guard. It was certainly not what anyone expected.
The first half saw the first team struggle, perhaps having relaxed a little too much, thinking it would be an easy ride. But the second team had other ideas, and by half-time, although the first team were leading, everyone watching was unsure if they could maintain it for the remaining 45 minutes.
However… somehow they did! Walking away with a 9-2 win, the first team’s comeback left everyone astonished. The match was a brilliant reminder of just how much the second team have improved since our last encounter. Lesson learned: never relax, no matter who you’re facing!
